for fly fishing do you need to have a special rod?

i was wondering because i am getting a shakespeare 8′ rod from walmart and was wondering if you needed any special type or rod for the fishing. Also what is a good name brand for a fly fishing bait.

Fly fishing uses a different reel but you can get by with a standard rod. The line in fly fishing floats on the water and then there is a very fine end that the fly is attached to. It is tricky compared to regular fishing because you are trying to lay the line on the water without splashing it.

there are no brands for flys…they are all tied over seas in africa and japan and places like that then stores buy them but the biggest thing you want to look at when getting a fly rod is what fish you are fishing for..for and all around trout rod id sugest a 5 weight…for an all around bass rod a 7 weight and for salmon/steelhead maybe an 8 or 9 weight rod and marlins or other fish…i think its a 14 wt rod..maybe its only 10 idk i forget…but this is just coming from experience i wouldnt buy that fly rod…you really want the best you can afford check out st. croix or redington they have top of the line rods for the people who cant spend 600 bucks

mate I don’t think you should attempt to fly fish. a) it requires a bit of skill b) you’re buying a rod from walmart (such a poor store) c) “What is a good name brand for a fly fishing bait”.. you don’t use bait you use a FLY and there not ‘brands’. And yes it is better to have a ‘proper’ fly fishing rod so you get the flick.

no it does not matter . I bought that from walmart and it is 5 years old and still working. However the longer rod and the better the reel the further you can throw out. If you havent bought the reel do that and I would say cortland or shakespeare would do. Good flies are anything that resembles a black, brown, white, and green color. You can buy a box of 30 pretied flies for 4.50 at kmart

Well having a fly rod definetly helps lol, normal rods dont have the same eyelets and do not handle the heavier line the same. You want to determine your pole size and strength with the fish you are chasing. The most important thing is you need to get a feel for the kind of rod you want by trying some others out, and it sounds like you are new to this sport. As for flies go to a baitshop and ask whats been hatching and have them show you the ropes, if you think picking out a pole is tough wait until you start learning about all the different flies and hatches.
